Hello Everybody,
Last week I received my confirmation that I’ll be hosting a booth at Medium’s pub crawl. Like Medium Day, the event is an opportunity for the platform’s creators to tell people about what they do. Here’s the link where the event will be held:
My plan is to be at my booth from 10-12 CST on March 19th. I’ll have a little better idea how it’s going to go after I attend the orientation. This event is hosted through Zoom and I’m glad they’re doing an orientation.
Medium Day used a platform called Hopin that I wasn’t familiar with. I’m not great on any of these platforms to be honest with you, but I’ve spent a bit more time on Zoom. My mistake on Hopin was that I didn’t realize you could click on one of the tabs to see questions your audience was asking. I noticed it right at the end and that was disappointing because it would have been a lot more fun to answer the questions as I went.
Oh well, live and learn.
Some of the publications I know that have a booth are:
Better Marketing—This is a great publication that casts a wide net. You can approach this with entrepreneur type articles or anecdotal stories about how you sold your self-published book. I haven’t written for them enough but I have a couple article ideas I’ve been working on. They’re definitely worth joining as a writer. Sometimes there’s a delay in getting added as a writer to the bigger publications, but it’s worth it here.
Heart Affairs—I have been doing some articles for this pub again and they’ve really been performing well. Michelle Brown is a wonderful editor.
MuddyUm—I’ve only done a couple stories for them. This is a humor publication so this might be a fun booth for a swing by.
Thirty over Fifty—Another pub where I’ve had some success. Thoughtful and uplifting stories written by people with experience.
Writing Cooperative—Justin Cox’s publication is one of the flagships of Medium. Justin also has a newsletter that always features practical and applicable information.
Visiting the publications I already know is one way I could take advantage of this. The other option is to just jump in, network, and try to make some new connections.
My, there are a lot of interesting publications on Medium. Here’s a super useful resource, Robin’s Publication List.
Take advantage of these opportunities
Medium has been one of my major sources of revenue for the last few years. As a result, I always participate in anything they offer. To be honest, I’m a bit of an introvert. Given a choice, I’d almost always rather plant myself in front of my computer and get some work done. But lately I’ve been more inclined to get out the old lever and get the ornery stone rolling downhill.
Some of you are much better than I am at taking advantage of opportunities like this. You don’t normally get the opportunity to sit down for a Zoom chat with the most well-known editors and publishers on Medium, so this could be very valuable.
I’m not entirely sure if I’m supposed to prepare any remarks or just be available to answer questions. I indicated that I would be available for 2 hours, so I don’t anticipate that they’ll expect me to chat for that whole time. I figured I could write some articles or do some sketches if nobody showed up. We’ll see.
Here’s an article by Robin Wilding about the Pub Crawl.
Open to Substackers too
It’s a free event, so any of you on this list who have free time on the 19th, please consider dropping by. I’ve been delighted to get your feedback on what has and hasn’t been working for you on Medium.
I’ve still been contemplating the various links you’ve sent me about articles that have received a Boost. Keep ‘em coming! I’m happy to feature them in this newsletter because I know there’s always interest in quality writing.
I’m also always really interested in seeing the expectations for articles that are outside my area of expertise. It would be fun if we could pull back the curtain and see how the program was really structured, but there’s kind of a wonderful mystery in getting all our information from the other side.
I see that Tony Stubblebine is scheduled to make some remarks on the 19th from 10:11 to 10:31 CST. Don’t forget to scroll through the publication list. You may just find your next publishing opportunity/writer community!
I believe all the information is here.
As always, leave your comments below!
I managed a couple of sessions but the time difference made it challenging. It was a great idea, though I think it was slightly chaotic! Maybe the next one will be smoother!
I missed it.
