Thank you for saying that! I was hoping people would like it and there would be a demand that I keep writing. I’m not sure what happens next, but I think a necromancer is involved.
Thanks. If you understand Substack better than I do... maybe I should create another "section" that's only this fantasy story. Do you think that makes sense? I need somebody to handle the technical side of things. I write some other stuff that gets heavy from time to time (these are dangerous times), but maybe there would be benefit in using more silly narrative. Still experimenting. Feedback is invaluable!
On a shelf in my daughter's bedroom is a stack of 3 ring binders with literally thousands of pages of stories like this. My eldest is 14 and she still demands I write stories for them. I feel very fortunate about that. Also, it gives me an opportunity to tell them what kind of boys are jerks :)
Great story. Just the right amount of "fear factor" . My dad was a lovely man! The teaching type who taught 3 girls to be assertive and strong, he saved my sense of being,,, Mom was a narcissist, her favourite words were "Go Outside!". I was able to convince my Dad to NOT vote for Nixon, and he voted Democrat ever after.
Happily, in the 50's TV wasn't as available like (sadly) it is today. We had one car, and went to the library every Saturday. Reading books also taught my soul to bloom.
I would love to read more of your stories and see more of your daughter's illustrations!! In case it's useful info: I use Blurb.com to self publish... I also enjoy books from a crowdfunding publisher unbound.com
I would happily buy your book! Please keep going!!
Lovely. Almost reminds me of the King Arthur books I read as a kid. I love unicorns, and now with these new medical forms that ask one to identify themselves, I always check "other," and write in "unicorn." No one seems concerned....thank you
My favorite line was “There will be no non-consensual riding in my story,”!
LOVE it! With just enough dashes of necessary violence! (AM I he only one whose minds eye saw Roland's part automatically played by a certain (demented) tangerine-hued malignant narcissist? It made his final date being skewered by the Unicorn quite satisfying!)
I suspect that I will! Especially with my penchant for casting those villain characters with real life villains in my minds eyes/ears! At one point, (I imagined) that Roland even did the "pucker face" and "accordian hands😆
When you get to the chapter about the Patriarchal Asshats, I’m guessing you’ll figure out who I’m talking about. My 13 year old daughter did, she called it out at the end, but I won’t spoil the surprise. Yes, all of today’s villains are ridiculed in this series.
Thank you for this! I bet your kids always chorus "What happened next?" after a story like this. Me, too 😊 What happened next?!

Well, then I better subscribe ;)

I know nothing about how Substack works, I'm afraid. But I do know that I need to know what happened next!
Probably Saturday. It might be fun to post an audio recording of me reading it to them so you get some reactions!
Good! Maybe around Friday!
Ha ha!! Bedtime must have been (or still are) a hoot in your household.

Forewarned = forearmed, hey?
I've actually been thinking about writing some stories for my young grandkids. You've given me inspiration.
Do it! But you have to read to them, that's the best part!
Thank you!
What a hilarious little tale. Love your "sensitivity" & the teaching of your daughters to not take any nonsense from anyone. Made me laugh. Thank you.

Thanks Nancy! And that’s for sharing the lovely story about your father! It’s great to hear that good dads are out there!
If your girls are pleased.. then carry on!! Nicely done!!
I think that's the most important part! Thank you!
You should publish these! I have grandchildren who would love them.

Powerful story .. please continue in your journey of writing stories such as this one !
Thank you Gene!
Very similar to Robert Munsch's "Paper Bag Princess" story (and that's a compliment).
Thank you! I'll have to look that one up.
Walter, check out Robert Munsch here, my kids grew up both reading his books and listening to him read his books. So many favourites,!!

Yes, I would buy your storybook
That’s exactly what I needed to hear. If you’re subscribed, I’ll keep writing :)

Well done, and thank you for sharing this gem!
Thank you for all those nice comments! I hope you enjoy the other chapters as much!

This is a wonderful story—can’t wait to read more.
Thank you, that’s so kind of you to say!
Good one!
That’s adorable. Did you do the drawing too?
my daughter did that. I have her do a lot of illustrations for me. Thank you!
Copyright it!!!
