You know Walter, it depends where you live too. In a lot of the big cities in the US, classes are so diverse that NOT speaking another language makes you stand out. Lots of programs with bilingual schools and that kind of thing too. But in regular middle class America, especially in the Midwest, there is definitely this prejudice to only speak English. Plenty of issues with racism too.

Cool what you're doing though. Keep speaking Spanish in public, people need to hear it more.

Yes, basically in blue areas it's common to be educated, and in red areas ignorance is encouraged. I'm a pioneer speaking Spanish in a red state. Maybe I can turn it purple?

Wow! Pioneer in a red state huh? You must be a bot. Ever hear of Texas and Florida where probably more Spanish is spoken than any other state? You are a clown.

What you believe is meaningless. I'm telling you about my experience.

Pioneer of speaking a different language in your home country, and hoping to change it to that of the incoming population. Sounds pretty unpatriotic.

Patriotism is for fascists

I wonder if you could give me a clear and concise definition of “fascism.” I actually also think patriotism is negative.

Patriotism should not be confused for jingoism.

Not sure what Jingoism means, so I will not comment. I know of the Terry Pratchett book.

What a useless little pile of drivel. Being bilingual is a true skill, and it’s rather great for your kids to speak two languages. And yet,you use your children as a virtue signal, so fucking woke I want to puke. Btw, here in America we speak English if we can. If we can speak Spanish or German, that’s also great. To teach your kids they are already somehow victims, so you can use them to virtue signal, is fucking sick. Know a really intelligent lady, capable of speaking five languages. Her name is Melanie, you useless little prick. And I’m curious if you know what it means to be a fascist. You keep using that word.

So your answer is to go bye. Might as well put your garbage behind a paywall, that way you won’t have to deal with people pointing out your incredible hypocrisy. Nobody will pay for this shit. And you certainly don’t represent Peru either, you fucking hack.

It’s just that I recall similar experiences being Indian born but raised here. My parents and I would speak to each other in Hindi but not outside the home. My sister and I lived in fear of basically everything ethnic. We were called the brown girls by the same girls who would literally strap themselves to n tin foil to get a summer tan. Always made me giggle.

I used to think it was funny too, but then Trump's constant hate rhetoric led to some acts of extreme aggression against my children. I wrote this article about 5 years ago, I've had a lot of bad experiences since then. This country needs to start to develop an awareness for the beauty of other cultures.

I 💯 agree. And that’s terrible about your daughters. It’s not just Trump. He is the main culprit, but this country has lied to itself for so long about race. It’s a nation built on lies with times of greatness. Trump is a result. Personally I felt the threat was always there.

Of course and just one more thing! I do read your articles on Medium and always look forward to your perspective. ✌️

That's true, but he sure brought it out to the open where it couldn't be ignored. When he went on tv with the "build the wall" chants, I knew I was going to see aggression the very next day. I've been writing article after article to dismantle all the lies (you're right, it goes back all the way to the foundations...this is a nation built on slavery). It's time for the United States to be more responsible about the injustices of the past.

Yes. He brought it out into the open. That’s for certain. I’m sorry for the effect it has had on your family personally. At times it feels hopeless, but giving up is not an option. Thank you for sharing your personal story.

Thank you for sharing as well. And I haven't given up. I write at least one anti-racism article a day (usually two), and I get a ton of insults and death threats... but I won't shut up until this country is more tolerant. Thanks for chatting :)
