You should definitely come at that one again from a different angle. I was real pissed when it was declined. I half wonder if the length hurt you. I don't know that, but I wonder if seeing an 11 minute read time put off a curator with an inbox of stories as long as their arm. I'd be curious to know how read times affect getting boosted. I know short reads very seldom get boosted, but I wonder if the same applies to long reads.
Oh, and thanks for that feedback about the length! I've already adopted a process of sitting on my work for an extra day, so maybe I'll try to be more mindful of length in the future. Usually it's possible to cut something down and it almost always makes it better. That's good advice!
Thanks! Same, I try sit on them as long as possible too. And you're so right, often pruning makes a story stronger. Getting there takes time, at least for me. :)
I've been thinking about that one today. In addition to cutting it down to about 9 minutes, I probably could have gone with a stronger title, and added a more impactful takeaway at the end. I think I was a little too subtle. Any one of these three might have made the difference, but all three would have made it much better. I'll apply those thoughts on the next one!
Thank you for that vote of confidence, and sorry to cost you a nomination! I nominated one last month that was 19 minutes and was also frustrated when it was declined. I know that you and I are the same in that we appreciate Medium and all the opportunities it has afforded us, but I would so love to get some feedback on why certain articles are passed over. It would help me create the kind of work that they prefer, although the success of some of my articles that were passed over does seem to indicate a certain level of quality was achieved. I also have to recognize that it's not reasonable to expect that all my articles receive a boost :)
The one thing Substack has over Medium in this department is that they leave the "boosting" strictly to the readers. So, if I really like an article, I can share it on Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Reddit or any other social media platform I choose and boost the author and article's profile, and they can do the same for me. No middlemen whatsoever.

Oh no worries on costing me a nomination. You didn't, they did. The response it's getting tells me it should have been pushed out a little wider. :)
