Loved the story .. it took me 35 years to undue my shyness … what an awesome way to grow up, physically and emotionally .. thank you for sharing a bit more about you .. now I know a tidbit more of why I like your writing
Thanks Gene! I keep having flashbacks to that time, so I've been waking up in the morning and recording these podcasts. It's kind of fun and people seem to like them :)
Enjoyed this…reminded me of my own journey. I was in the Peace Corps in the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific and actually never fully committed again to a life in the USA without an escape. My travels have been in the South Pacific India, around NYC…. I have been to Brazil but not so much where you have been. I owned a company in the USA in NYC but sold it during a recession and now staying mainly in Rajasthan in India. I was thinking of building a home here in India but suddenly I got the urge to be back on Long Island. So I have rented an apt in Montauk on Long Island. I first visited Montauk when I was about 5 and my Aunt and Uncle introduced me to it. From Minneapolis originally. My Father’s family from Latvia emigrated there as explorers like us. My mother’s parents ventured to America from Maidstone Kent on their honeymoon. My parents, no longer alive, met in Minneapolis. I am in a very special ayurvedic health stay in the jungle near Coimbatore. In South India surrounded by old temples and ancient trees which are so big and old, I feel I could make an apartment inside. (Well at least a meditation room). But I miss the ocean and lakes.
I will be back on Long Island in Montauk for this coming summer. The ocean, the birds, the lighthouse, feeding sea gulls, the fresh fish, most of the end of Long Island is state park. I rented an apartment. I am always drawn back to Montauk.
My plan is to return to Udaipur in Rajasthan when it gets too cold but at least I hope to experience the first snowfall which is always magical on Long Island in the state park at the lighthouse.
