Hi Walter,

Thanks again for more great insight on Medium. Wow, that is an impressive amount for your Boosted article - it's a great article.

Just to share an update from my side - I'm still toiling away on Medium with less quantity, more quality - and it's paying off. This month has been my biggest month by far since I started on the platform. I will make about double (around $2200) the best month I've ever had thanks to 3 out of my last 7 articles getting a Boost. I still have no idea who is giving me the Boosts - it's across different publications and different topics. I have a better idea now of the general type of article that this person (or people) is looking for, but it still feels like a bit of a crap-shoot.

In any case, I am always very thankful (and giddy for a time) for every one that I get.

That's fantastic John! I'll be sitting at around $2k this month, but it's from quantity. I've been writing freely lately, but maybe I'll mix up my strategy again for next month. It's good to know that different strategies work!

Hey Walter, thanks so much for sharing these insights. Though I no longer write on Medium, as I just don't have the time due to work and all, and I was not making much there and I am working on growing my Substack Community Vault of the Supernatural and hoping that something comes of it. But I will say this, I always find things I need to cut from my writing, too. Great advice as always, friend. You rock. :) :)

Also thanks for sharing that older piece! Fun to see it get a little airtime after being extinct for the past couple years.

Yeah, giving new life to the old pieces is just how we survive :)

Thank you for your constant encouragement, Walter. I appreciate the phone call with you and your generous offer to review stories written specifically for Boost intentions. Because Substack eclipsed Medium when it comes to factors important to me, including the calibre of other professional writers I can associate with and the income streams, I am sticking with Substack as the preferred platform. Even with your depth of experience with Boost and your personal relationships with Medium editors, you see a decline. I take those reports from you about Boost into daily and weekly decisions about what to write and for whom.

The advantage of making my work free on Substack is that I can put it on both Platforms. The trends always go up and down. I support you no matter where you put your work Georgia!

I have not had a Boost since July 2024, which is obviously the month my writing began to suck! My second-to-last Boosted piece rolled over to the $29k total Sunday, though, so at least I am making money there.

I’ve given up on Medium. I just throw it some leftover crumbs from Substack occasionally.

I did that for the last two months. I've been publishing every day over there and I made $2k in both months. However, there's some signs of a diminishing return so I might have to rethink my strategy again.

That's typical for writing though :)

I've definitely benefited similarly from the Boost program! I really think writing with that standard in mind was a huge help for me in continuing to improve and learn to cut the superfluous. Great piece!

I appreciated how I felt almost the same reading your piece as I did when I read one of mine from about the same period. It's interesting that we've undergone parallel development in that time :)

Thanks for your frankness about the business end of things, Walter!

“In my own habits as a reader, I bounce off things quick.” Same! It’s why I’ve really interrogated what makes me sink in instead of bounce off.

Yes, nothing teaches us more than recognizing our own patterns. If I stop and think, "What would hold ME as a reader?" I generally write something pretty good! It's so easy to mail it in :)
