I wholly agree! I’m hosting a dinner party on Friday night and I want it to be fun and light and a good time for everyone, so I intend to make it happen!
I sincerely appreciate your thoughts… in fact I could feel some pain as you talked. I spend 2+ months every year in Mexico, and consider it my second home. Many years ago we went to Mazatlan .. have been going back nearly every year, because of the people. When we first arrived it warmed my sole when the concierge walked up to me and said “welcome home Mr. Wood”. It has warmed my heart ever since. Consequently I look for the same feeling when I meet people here in the US. In fact, this is what led me to you, Walter! Almost to a person my friends in Mexico have spent time in the US, and they frequently talk about the indifferent Americans. They too are looking for people who have human kindness and understanding. I think our search for human kindness is universal in the world. Yet each of us are often derailed in our efforts by some bully somewhere, or a job that we feel we must have to support our family. I fully intend on continue in my search until the day I fall off the perch as it’s the one thing I can control that brings me joy!
That’s delightful Gene. I try to spend at least a few weeks in Peru every year. My wife’s family is there. Yes, they are so kind and accepting. I’m looking forward to returning there for a longer stay. But I’d like to leave the US in a better place than it is right now.
Rightly or wrongly, if we're going to make any headway going forward, we need to talk about the issues, not the election. Not how terrible ‘they’ are, not how superior ‘we’ are.
I truly believe that the insults, blame and vituperative shit casting going on now only validate their beliefs about us, rightly or wrongly...and it's not helpful to us....only to them. They will use it to further isolate and gaslight the misinformed and disinformed dolts with the wool sleep masks.
While it might temporarily soothe our scorched emotions, it only makes things worse going forward.
As bad as it will be, perhaps Trump had to get reelected to end MAGA. A win for Harris would only have made them stronger.
Consider these points...
The horrific rhetoric against women, escalating already, isn't just being aimed at liberal women. The “4B” movement among women will certainly affect Republican men the most…..and MAGA is already an angry sausage fest. I believe that would e happened even if, or especially if, Harris had won.
The schoolgirls coming home crying because what the boys are saying…..their parents are both sides of the political divide.
Rape victims, and their loved ones come in both red and blue.
The women dying of miscarriages because their red state doctors are scared to touch them….most have been Republicans.
Parents finding out about DOE cuts to programs for autistic kids? You know half are Republican…. they're freaking out already.
The employers looking at deported employees and skyrocketing wages due to a diminished labor pool? Largely Republicans.
The loss of FEMA will affect poor state Republicans just as much as, if not more than, blue state citizens.
When Musk crashes the economy and the stock market, Republicans will suffer too…they experienced the same losses during Trump's first term that we did.
When senior entitlements are torched, Republicans will experience that too….probably in larger numbers than liberals will.
Of course, my mother wouldn't listen to my warnings, voted for X@#$& for the third damned election in a row. Yesterday, I sent her an article talking matter of factly about Musk's plan for the economy and entitlements. Told her to start planning for it, because SS and Medicare will be affected. Normally, she completely ignores my political texts, this one caught her attention. She started asking what she should do, and we talked about it, without political rancor. And I'm sure she's talked to both her sisters about it by now. One is a total blabbermouth, so half my hometown, mostly Trumpers, is probably talking about it by now, lol.
When Medicaid and other assistance programs are gutted, they'll be affected as much as anyone. I have two Republican nephews with unwed Republican baby mommas who are completely dependent on assistance to get by. Lots of Republican voters depend of government assistance.
There will be personal consequences for their votes. Thus the far right’s fanatical urgency to intimidate us into stopping talking about any of it.
Shutting us up would make the job of blaming Democrats for everything that much easier when the shit hits the fan, which it will.
If we want to be the party that looks out for people, we can't let that fall by the wayside when we lose an election.
That makes talking about these kitchen table issues even more important. Especially with people we know personally, but may not agree with. Because they will talk about it with people they do agree with.
We have the time to plant those seeds now….if not yet the courage or the will.
Nothing changes minds and policy faster than an outraged populace, and that gives us a massive opening…if only we're willing to walk through it.
Lots of Republican folks like our policies, when they don't know they're coming from us....that's a sterling opportunity.
The Nazis know this all too well, thus their rage posting and violent rhetoric….all a frenzied efforts to intimidate us in advance.
Don't let them win. Roll up your sleeves and plug your nose, if you must, but dig in.
