I am happy to say that I was woke before “woke” was “woke.”

Call me woke and I will wear it as a badge of honor. You can also call me a progressive, humanist and “bleeding heart liberal.” All of these are badges I would proudly wear.

Be woke - don’t think and act like your typical rich, heterosexual, Christian, white man - who by the way, writes our history and our laws, and are threatened by free thinking, strong women, people of color, non-heterosexuals, atheists/secularists, non-Christians and open-minded people.

To be clear, by definition:

Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination.”

Is that the reason white supremacists hate the word?

Woke is also sometimes just used to characterize someone as “hip” or “open-minded.” Sign me up for that meaning as well. I grew up as a “hippie.” That was not at all popular in the days of Nixon. Peace, love and treating everyone as your brother? Seems quaint today. We actually believed it back in my younger days. Some of we Baby Boomers were actually “woke” in the 1960s. Unfortunately, not all of us!

Woke means being conscious of racial discrimination in society and other forms of oppression and injustice. In mainstream use, woke can also more generally describe someone or something as being “with it.”

Showing an awareness of pertinent issues associated with society or the community is also a key part of wokeness.

- socially conscious

- socially concerned

- culturally sensitive.

Yeah, that!

But we will only succeed if we reject the growing pressure to retreat into cynicism and hopelessness. … we need to be woke. More than that, it is imperative we be woke every day.

“We have a moral obligation to "stay woke," take a stand and be active; challenging injustices and racism in our communities and fighting hatred and discrimination wherever it rises.”

— Barbara Lee

I said I was a Secular Humanist. Our principles embody wokeness in every commitment.

Be proud - embrace WOKE - and wear it as a badge of pride, dignity and honor.

Yes, I'm a proud woke person. Always was. Keeping folks unwoke means they are unaware. When they are unaware, the narrative can easily be fed to them and easier to control. Stay woke my friends 🧡

I woke up when I was still a toddler. I learned about sexism and male superiority when my brother was born. I became brilliantly aware of his superior place in our family just because he was born with a penis. I realized then and theretofore that sexism, misogyny, bigotry are all very dangerous and damaging attitudes to have in life. I was a feminist before I started grade school. I despise discrimination in all it forms. So yeah, I am woke and proud of it!

Perfectly summed up in 6:02 minutes! Americans don’t have to be “woke”, but we damn sure need to WAKE UP!
