I joined the Air Force at age 19 in order to leave my small town farm community. Overseas tours of duty proved educational and allowed me the opportunity to marry a Turkish woman in a Turkish civil ceremony and take our Honeymoon in Istanbul. 36 years later, I am still learning new things about her! We're currently enjoying retirement in the Tampa Bay area.
Any bad situation is hard to escape. I escaped my first marriage and the second one seemed to be going along well. Then the spouse lost his job of almost 40 years due to a student lying to admin about something. They told him he had to retire because they did not want tv and media involved as the student said he was going to them. He went home and said he was now retired and was not going to look for any kind of work. That was 2013. He sat on his computer and followed faux news and it was downhill from there. With the way twitter was set up to send you more of what you looked for he was getting all the MAGA stuff sent to him. I worked for the next 5 years and since I was so busy it wasn't 't till just before I retired to help my mom did I start to notice how far gone he ws. He is in terrible health and as an RN if I was not here he would be dead by then. We have an agreement no politics are to be discussed. I would probably go to Canada if things were different but financially and morally I can not do that after more than 45 years together. I have made minor efforts to try and discuss calmly about things but the responses show that when they are so indoctrinated there is nothing you can say.
You paint so vividly Walter. I also come from a small town in the 50’s but back then the red and blue of life had yet to be torn asunder. It’s so difficult having to reconcile with old friends who no longer believe as we once did together.
Even worse is, coming back to my home town to retire. HUGE MISTAKE!
HUGE!
Absolutely resonates with the small town I grew up in. So glad I got out.

That's a lovely story Lawrence. Thanks for sharing!
I am in Dunedin just west of Tampa where our dear governor grew up and went to school. He won't even come here when he is in the area.

I'm sorry to hear that Teri. I wish I had a solution. I'll keep working for one!

I am sorry that your two marriages didn't go as well as one imagines a marriage will be.
