Couldn't agree more...and the topic of building an identity out of grievance is serious and one that has got to get unraveled somehow. Especially with racism woven in. Perfect for totally ignorant whites. Just got gas last night and I looked at the price per gallon, way down now, logically due to market conditions, and wondered where were all the assholes slagging Biden about high fuel costs now, following that same "logic" saying "thanks Joe Biden". Nowhere. If they think a president can affect global energy markets with the stroke of a pen, or with satanic Democrat energy, whatever.

Great article. Terrible title. If we ever hope to reintegrate those people back into the fold, calling them names is just not productive.

Ignorant isn't a name, it's a fact. We must treat contemptible worldviews with contempt. The BS moderate viewpoint only enables fascism.

Agreed. There’s no reason to soft pedal it. Plus, the people described will not read this or any other article with accurate information. Sad but true.

Now come on. I’m a student of The Linguistics of Community Development. I have a PA degree and have worked with disparate communities. Trash talk is just not helpful. I agree with your article and assessment otherwise.

It's not trash talk to call out somebody for being ignorant. You're just stating a fact. Anyone who votes republican thinking it will be good for the economy is ignorant and they need to know it.

Right, mass deportation of food workers whilst promising the cult members that food costs will go down. Nonsensical and totally insulting AND dangerous. The meteor hurtling straight for earth is not a meteor, or immigrants, or people of color or aborted fetuses or witches, it's CLIMATE CHANGE AND FAMINE hello??!!!! We need to get to work because we have about an hour to save ourselves. Or we could just keep dragging knuckles and inciting hate for fun and profit.

I'm not normaizing any of it, at all. It's nothing to "meet in the middle with". Nope. Totally unacceptable and dangerous. So, you do you, but I'm all in with Walter on this

Great article! I live amongst the fields that provide food for our country. These fields are maintained by migrant farm workers. These men and women work their asses off. What blows my mind is the asshole farmers have their fucking Trump signs displayed! Support the man that wants to take all your farm workers and destroy them?! Good luck with that! Can’t wait until it will cost $10 to buy a head of lettuce because it is in short supply!

Harsh but true. The shithole states receive the benefits of a social democracy, while disparaging the benefits of a social democracy.

I can call them shithole states because I’m a 6th generation Texan, DAR and practice OBGyn in Texas. I stay and fight because home is worth fighting for.

All they do with their special voting powers is make sure they get the benefits and nobody else. It's so tiresome.

Back in... I think it was maybe the Reagan years, my uncle was sitting on several thousand acres in Wyoming where he would normally grow wheat but for a few years, he didn't plant anything. When asked how he was getting by with no crops to sell, he matter of factly told me the government was paying him NOT to grow wheat that year. It was an eye-opening encounter.

We all know most of his base is not of....how to say it?....an academic background, so they aren't entirely equipped to understand how economics works. He fooled them by pretending to be an "expert" due to his financial "success".

Excellent article, Walter! So much fear and loathing has been built around the scare word “socialism.” How I wish corporate media had the guts to educate their viewers on the truth!

These are uneducated and lazy people. The republicans spew the hatred and bigotry they want to hear and the cycle continues. They never research when the recessions hit because the republicans blame everyone and everything but themselves

Plus, farming isn’t what it was in the 30’s & 40’s, where small farms would supply people in the area with fresh food. Farming is an industry now, big bucks, and boy, does the industry looooove those government dollars.

That’s why they are still and forever broke. Republicans have never been the friends to the working class or rural farmers. They only do things to defend the already rich, the oligarchs, hedge fund crooks, and so on.
