Hi Walter,

I hope you are doing great and that your writing is going well!

I've had a bit of a slower month in May than April, but still going decent.

I want to second your motion on buying a refurbished phone. I haven't bought a new phone in 15 years. My current phone is an unlocked iPhone 7 that I bought 4 years ago for $250. It's now an 8 year old phone that still works just fine - no issues.

The other major money saver for our family is that we never buy a new car. The last new car I bought was back in 2004 - over 20 years ago. We generally pay around about $10000 cash for a model and brand that has a very reliable history and is fuel efficient, and that we can get about 5 years out of. This is easy to research on the internet. During this time, we have had 3 great cars and 1 that was a bit of a lemon. Even with the lemon, it was still worth it - we calculated that over the years, we have saved obscene amounts of money relative to the cost of buying a new car, paying for all the "warranty" service, depreciation, etc.

We can afford to buy new phones and cars, but it just doesn't make fiscal sense.

My .02.

I 100% agree with the used car sentiment. We don't buy new cars either. I have an article about how to buy a used car that I need to dust off and repost. I spent $3,000 on the Subaru Forester I'm driving now. I have had it since 2019! I'll run it until it dies. You also need to find a reliable mechanic. Dealer mechanics just want to pressure you to get an upgrade.

I'd much rather not be scrambling to pay the bills! Thanks for the comment!

I have a Subaru Forester too and I love it. Very reliable and inexpensive to drive.

They’re good for high mileage too. Mine’s at 224,000. I don’t drive very far, so I’ll use it until it dies.

Also learn to cook, learn to have a full pantry of basic foods, grains, beans dried and canned, veggies and maybe grow a small kitchen garden … cooking and eating plant based has helped me a lot, I make soymilk and various foods from the soymilk, such as yogurt, tofu and cheese sauces …. And grains! I cook everything from brown rice to sorghum. And make a nice sourdough bread, cakes, cookies, bar cookies, pies. Also plant based meat analogues from wheat gluten. It is a bit of work but our health benefits and we enjoy the food very much.
