I can relate to every word of your post, personally and on the larger scale. We live in such an abusive culture. On the national level it manifests as greed to keep the haves and have-nots in their place. I didn’t recognize the scale of abuse in my life until I was nearly 60. I tried to live my life according to my personal values and have often succeeded but the abusive and neglectful undertones of my family of origin were persistent. Now I can’t unsee. I just hope I live long enough to live out some of my dreams before I’m too old. Thanks for your insightful writing!

This is a beautiful piece of honesty and encouragement. I’m so happy you discovered and decided long ago to choose, protect and revel in your joy each day. Thank you for sharing it and inspiring us to listen to our inner voice and do the same.

Break through an iron curtain of deceit. Also known as American exceptionism. Freedom from thought.

How do we convince Americans that thinking is cool? Maybe convince them it's an acquired taste - like Scotch. But leads in the opposite direction. Sober rather than comatose.

This is what attracted me to studying and writing history- there are multiple perspectives available regarding the telling of these stories, and none is paramount above the others. You have to create a combination of perspectives to create an authentic narrative.

In the 21st century the emergence of new voices in the telling of history from new perspectives has invigorated what had once been largely the stogy reinforcement of white people-created founding myths. What works for the field can work for other sectors as well.

Trump and co. are attacking the arts and humanities because they know this. Whereas, here in Canada, I have been able to educate myself on history from different periods and sectors, as well as fill out the canvas of history on the topics I most think need it, with our governments quietly providing funding without conflict, most of the time. The difference between Canada and the U.S. is that we know our history- and yours- very well.

A truly powerful story of overcoming inner demons. And also, apparently, the story of America. Bravo.

Also, love your metaphors.

Herd immunity has been proffered by Trump since 2020. Fauci was quoted at the time labelling the idea of herd immunity as a response to pandemic, viruses and contagious disease as "ridiculous." Today Fauci has been stripped of all security previously bestowed onto him and paying out of pocket staying quiet and hidden due to the constant and real threats to himself and his family. And Trump is "King of the World" And his ideas are so normalized within the GOP they no longer filter their speech with statements like "we all die anyway" spoken out loud as we clutch our pearls. See you on June 14th. Is there really anything more important that day for you to do? Really? Come on! Really?
